Shoutout to the old guy who called me out on my spoil line setup
Honestly, I was running a 10 inch cutterhead in a muddy river bend last month and thought my setup was fine. This retired operator, Frank, came by the site and straight up told me my spoil line was too steep, saying 'Kid, you're losing half your slurry to splashback before it even hits the barge.' I moved the support pontoons closer, dropping the angle from like 30 degrees to maybe 15. Ngl, my material transfer rate jumped by at least 20% the next day. Has anyone else had a veteran point out something simple you totally missed?

Man, that's the best kind of advice. Had a similar thing with a ladder pipe setup on a dewatering job. Old timer saw my discharge hose just kinda flapping in the current and told me to sink a simple sandbag anchor for the outlet. Went from spraying everywhere to a clean, steady flow. Those little fixes make all the difference.

Yeah, the sandbag anchor thing joelwells mentioned is so true. It reminds me of when we were running a long discharge line across this field. The hose kept kinking at this one dip, creating a total choke point. Somebody's dad who was visiting just walked over and threw a scrap piece of plywood under the dip to level it out. Looked stupid but the flow evened out instantly. Sometimes you're so focused on the big picture you miss the simple fix right in front of you.
