I finally learned the hard way why you never skip the pre-dredge sonar sweep

Spent two hours fishing out a submerged steel cable that wrapped around my cutter head because I was in a hurry and figured a quick visual scan was good enough. Has anyone else had their whole day wrecked by some hidden junk you thought wasn't there?

Dredging without a sweep is asking for trouble, but I gotta say a visual scan ain't gonna cut it when there's silt or murky water... I had a buddy who lost a whole afternoon to an old anchor chain that was completely invisible from the surface. The sonar is the only way to catch that stuff before you're hung up.

Read somewhere that side-scan catches stuff even when you can't see it.
