Hot take: That silt dam failure in Galveston Bay changed my whole view on monitoring

We were running a 12-inch cutter suction dredge on a channel job when the whole containment area gave way overnight. Now I argue with my boss about checking the turbidity meters every hour versus trusting the automated alarms. Anyone else have a close call that made them change their routine?

So what finally convinced your boss to let you check hourly, or is that still a fight?

Checking your email every hour seems a bit much, doesn't it? The world won't end if a message sits for ninety minutes. Maybe @iris574 has a boss who thinks every email is a five-alarm fire, but that's rarely true. Constant checking just makes people anxious over nothing.

Honestly, we never won that fight. The boss still wants instant replies, so I just pretend to check hourly while actually glancing at my phone way more often. It's a dumb game that makes everyone stressed for no good reason. I feel for anyone stuck in that same spot. The whole thing just proves some managers care more about control than actual work getting done.
