Heard a guy talking about a cracked suction line that almost killed his pump
Was at the supply shop in Norfolk yesterday and overheard this old timer telling the counter guy how he caught a hairline crack in his suction line right before a 12-hour shift. Said if he had run it like that, the pump would have cavitated and blown the impeller for sure, costing him around $800 in parts. He said he always does a quick visual check now before starting up, even if he's running late. You guys do a pre-start inspection every time or just when something feels off?

Hang on, wouldn't a cracked suction line let air in which would make the pump lose prime or run rough, not necessarily cavitate the same way a clogged intake would? I always thought cavitation was more from a restriction or low fluid level, not a hairline crack letting a little air sneak in.

That part about him catching it right before a 12-hour shift got me thinking. How often does a crack like that actually show up on a visual check? I've had hairline fractures hide under paint or gunk that looked fine until I put pressure to the line. Did the old timer say what he looked for specifically, like any trick to spotting those cracks before they bite you?
