Dropped $600 on a used cutterhead with bad seals, learned my lesson

I bought a used cutterhead off a guy last month for 600 bucks. Said it was barely used and looked clean in the photos. First day on the job I noticed grease leaking into the dredge spoil, had to shut down and pull the whole thing apart. Found out the seals were shot and the housing had wear marks from running dry. Ended up costing me another 400 to rebuild it and lost two full days of work. Anyone else get burned buying used parts from online listings?

Kevin's got a point about checking the oil. I heard a guy on another forum say he brings a clean paper towel and a flashlight to check fluid levels before even talking price. Saved him from buying a pump with chocolate milk oil one time.

Paper towel and flashlight though? I mean I get checking the oil but that seems like a lot. Bought three pumps last year sight unseen and two were fine. One had some sludge but it was twenty bucks. Not exactly gambling the farm here. Sometimes people overthink this stuff like theyre buying a car.

Did you pull the fill plug and check the oil color before handing over the cash?
