Appreciation post: the old timer at the dock in Galveston who showed me how to read a dredge pump curve

I was swapping out impellers last Tuesday and this retiree wandered over, saw me guessing at the wear specs, and just started explaining the actual math behind it. He pulled up a graph on his phone and walked me through how head pressure and flow rate actually interact on our rig. Has anyone else had an older hand drop knowledge that made you realize you've been doing things on autopilot?

Read an article about stuff like this, how a lot of old timers have skills that just aren't taught in textbooks anymore. That graph trick sounds way more useful than just swapping parts and hoping for the best, you know? It's cool he took the time to show you instead of just shaking his head.

...and it's not just with old timers either. I swear half the stuff I actually use day to day I learned from someone showing me, not from a manual or a class. Like my dad's way of checking if a cake is done by tapping it instead of using a toothpick, just from watching him. Those little shortcuts feel like they're getting rarer cause everyone's just googling for the official steps. Makes you wonder what else we're missing out on because nobody thought to write it down.
