A rookie's question made me see our silt screen setup in a new light

I used to think our silt screen placement was just fine, following what the old hands taught me. Last month, a new crew member pointed out how the screen was flat against the flow during low tide. I told him it was standard practice and not to worry about it. But he kept noting how much muck was slipping past it into the clear zone. After a few days, I let him tilt the screen a bit to catch the current better. The difference was huge, with less silt spreading and fewer complaints from the dock owners nearby. Now I make sure to listen to any idea, even from the greenest guys on the barge. It turns out a simple chat can fix a problem you've ignored for years.

Remember when they sent that consultant who used words like "synergy" and "paradigm" for three days straight? We paid thousands for that, but the actual fix was some kid angling a piece of mesh. We'll over-engineer the report about the fix though, for sure. Gotta make it sound complex enough to justify another meeting.

That "standard practice" line is what we all say when we don't want to admit we're doing something the lazy way. Bet that rookie found the fix in some coffee-stained three-ring binder that nobody has opened since the OSHA guy visited. Pretty funny that tilting a screen is the big rocket science idea we all ignored for years. Makes you wonder what else is in those manuals, huh?

Look, maybe we ignore those binders because most of the time the old way works just fine. So what if tilting a screen helps one person? Half those "fixes" are for problems nobody actually has. Makes you wonder if we're overthinking simple tasks sometimes, right?
