Thought I knew overlay blocks until a commercial job in Denver

Spent half a day fighting with a set of overlay blocks on a 40-unit apartment job because I assumed the door frames were square like residential. Turns out commercial slabs shift way more than I figured and my blocks were off by almost 3/16 inch. Redid them all with adjustable shims under the blocks and it saved me from ripping out every frame. Anyone else run into slab variance on multi-family?

Oh man, you just hit on something that drives me nuts. I had a similar headache on a townhouse complex last fall where the concrete was off by nearly a quarter inch across the whole slab. I was using those cheap plastic leveling pads and they just didn't cut it. Ended up switching to some thicker rubber shims I found at a hardware store near the site, and it made all the difference. Have you ever tried stacking different shim materials to get the exact height you need?

Have you considered that moisture might be affecting your shim heights over time?
