Serious question, has anyone else moved away from 3D modeling for simple layouts?

At a big trade show in Chicago last year, I watched a guy draft a full commercial kitchen layout on a 2D CAD program in under an hour. Everyone around me was talking about 3D being the only way, but his speed and clarity were amazing. I've been using 2D for basic plans ever since and my shop time has dropped by about 20%. Does anyone else find 3D overkill for straightforward jobs?
