Why does nobody talk about the mess when you try to fix a garbage disposal?

Mine jammed up last Tuesday night after my kid tried to put corn cobs down it. I got the hex wrench, stuck it in the bottom, and gave it a good turn. A huge splash of nasty, week-old sink water shot straight up and hit the ceiling. I spent the next hour cleaning my kitchen walls. Has anyone found a way to do this without getting a face full of old food water?

That splash is a rite of passage nobody warns you about.

What gets me is how that splash always seems to hit the one clean spot on your pants. It's like it has a mind of its own, aiming for maximum annoyance. You're just standing there, defeated by a puddle you saw coming.

Honestly I just started wearing old shoes I didn't care about. After ruining a good pair, I learned to keep some beat-up ones by the door for that exact reason. It's the only thing that saved me from the panic.
