TIL the hard way that leveling compound needs primer first

My buddy swore I could skip the primer on a 10x12 living room floor and just pour the leveler straight over old tile. Now I've got a cracked mess and $60 worth of compound peeling up in sheets, anyone else been burned by that shortcut?

And that "bad sunburn" comparison is perfect because you just know it's gonna hurt when you finally peel it off... plus you're left with that sticky mess underneath that won't go away no matter how much you scrub.
