Should you bother with primer when painting trim?

I skipped primer on some bathroom baseboards last month and the paint is already peeling in spots. Has anyone else had better luck using a bonding primer versus the all-in-one paint and primer combos?

Bonding primer is the way to go, I used it on some old door frames and it made a huge difference compared to paint+primer combos. Did you sand it down before the new coat?

Did a buddy of mine skip primer on his kitchen trim and it bubbled up within a week.

Your buddy learned the hard way. Kitchen trim is a high traffic area with steam and grease that'll destroy bare wood fast. I always use a shellac based primer on trim because it seals better than anything else. Without that barrier the paint peels like a bad sunburn. Did he at least sand the bubbled spots down before repainting?
