Rant: used spackle to fill a big hole in drywall for two years

I kept patching a 4 inch hole in my hallway with spackle, and it would crack again every 8 weeks during winter. Last week my buddy visited and laughed, said I needed joint compound and mesh tape for anything bigger than a screw hole. How is that stuff not labeled more clearly at the store?

Your buddy was absolutely RIGHT about the mesh tape - I learned that the HARD way patching a 3 inch hole in my basement last year. @wendy_jackson is spot on about spackle only being for tiny fixes, because that stuff has zero strength for anything bigger than a nail pop. Grab a small bucket of lightweight joint compound and a roll of self-adhesive mesh tape, it'll hold up through winter no problem.

Spackle's fine for small cracks, just not for patching a four inch gap.
