My deck plan means taking out a healthy pine for the view
It feels kinda selfish to chop it down just so we can see the sunset better from the new deck.

Property value is a real thing. A clear view can add serious money if you ever sell. That tree blocks all the afternoon sun for your yard too. You could plant new trees somewhere else that don't block the house. Using your own land to live better isn't selfish, it's practical.

Tried to clear a view like that once. Ended up with a backyard that looked like a tornado hit it. After hearing about @jenny_coleman's fine, I realized I dodged a BULLET. Property value might go up, but so can your costs if you don't check permits. Now I've got these sad little saplings that barely give any shade. Sometimes living better means keeping the tree and buying better sunglasses.
