A contractor friend pointed out my deck joist spacing was off by a full inch, so I spent Saturday redoing it with a proper layout stick.
He casually said 'your bounce is coming from those gaps, not the wood' while having a beer, and now I finally get why everyone stresses about consistent 16-inch centers, lol.
