Just learned my fence stain was going on backwards for 2 summers

I spent last Saturday restaining the back fence and finally noticed the grain direction, turns out I'd been brushing against it the whole time so the color never soaked in right. My neighbor laughed from over the fence and asked if I was trying to paint the wood off. Has anyone else had a brush stroke direction facepalm moment?
