Water heater blew on me while I was trying to fix a drip

I was in my basement in Detroit two months ago and heard this weird hissing from the water heater. Thought I could just tighten a valve to stop a slow leak, but the whole thing burst open and flooded half the floor. Ended up turning off the water main at 11pm and spending $200 on a wet vac from Home Depot. Has anyone else had a simple repair turn into a disaster like that?

God, @ryanh56 is right, that wet vac saved my sanity, but next time just drain and replace the anode rod every year.

The wet vac from Home Depot was probably the smartest purchase of that whole ordeal, right? I mean, at 11pm on a Tuesday, what other option did you really have besides praying the water would just evaporate overnight? Your water heater just wanted to remind you that DIY stands for "Disaster, It's Yours.
