That one weird trick for patching drywall that actually works
So I had a hole about the size of a baseball in my hallway from where a doorknob punched through. Watched about 10 YouTube videos and every pro said to cut a square patch with backer board. Tried it twice and the patches kept cracking along the edges. On the third try I just used a piece of mesh tape over the hole and spread some hot mud over it. Let it dry, sanded it flat, did a thin second coat. Been 4 months now and no cracks. Made me wonder if half those YouTube guys are just making it look harder than it is. Has anyone else ditched the backer board method and just used tape on smaller holes?

Man, you're totally right. I had the exact same thing happen with a hole from a coat rack, tried the backer board method twice and gave up, just slapped mesh tape and all purpose mud on it and it's been solid for over a year now. Those YouTube guys definitely overcomplicate it for small holes.
