Rant: Replacing a single broken tile in my bathroom floor took me three entire weekends because the subfloor was a mess.

I thought it would be a quick Saturday job, but the old adhesive was like concrete and I had to level a huge section of the plywood underneath before I could even think about setting the new one, so what's your worst time estimate fail?

Three entire weekends" is brutal. That old adhesive turning into concrete is the worst kind of surprise. I once tried to replace a single kitchen cabinet door hinge. The screw heads were stripped and the wood was basically dust. What started as a ten minute fix turned into a whole new door and an afternoon of swearing. Did you have to use a special tool to get that tile adhesive up, or was it just a chisel and pure anger?

That stripped screw situation @rowan_roberts49 described sounds familiar. Did you end up using a rotary tool or just brute force to get the old tile out?

Remember reading about someone trying to fix a wobbly ceiling fan? They thought it was just a loose bracket. Turned out the whole electrical box was barely hanging on to a single, rotten joist. They had to cut open the ceiling, sister in new wood, the whole nightmare. Makes a three weekend tile job sound almost normal. Some of these old houses hide the worst problems behind the simplest fixes.
