Pro tip: ask the old timer at the hardware store before you buy anything

Last Saturday I was at the Ace on 5th in Columbus trying to pick a gate latch, and this guy Bob, 30 years in the trade, grabs the one in my hand and says 'that'll strip out by November.' He walked me to a $12 stainless option instead and showed me the gauge difference. Saved me a return trip and the headache. Anyone else got a hardware store regular they trust more than the reviews online?

That Bob sounds like a goldmine. My guy at the local shop once talked me out of a fancy drill, said my cheap one would do the job just fine. He was right, but now I still feel the need to show him my projects like I'm looking for a passing grade.
