My neighbor down the street showed me a trick for fixing drywall holes with a wire coat hanger
I was patching up a 4-inch hole in my hallway last weekend and Barry from 3 doors over came by to borrow a level and saw me struggling. He showed me how to bend a coat hanger into a loop to hold the patch in place while the mud dries, which is way better than trying to balance a scrap piece of wood. Has anyone else got a weird household item they use for drywall repairs?

Patricialee I hear you on the ceiling part, that must have been a pain to hold up. I actually read somewhere that some people use a bent hanger to fish wires through walls too, like for running speaker cables. Never tried it myself but it makes sense since the wire is flexible but still stiff enough to push through insulation. For bigger holes though, I still grab a scrap of plywood and a drywall screw, the hanger trick seems sketchy if the mud is heavy.

Used to roll my eyes at guys who treat coat hangers like a universal repair tool, but Barry is onto something here. Tried his method on a hole in my living room ceiling, worked way better than the wood block I normally balanced on a stick. The wire bends just right to hold the mesh tape tight without slipping off. Still not sure I'd trust it for anything bigger than a fist-sized hole, but for small patches it saves a lot of cussing under your breath.

Man that ceiling stuff is a nightmare, glad the hanger trick saved you some cussing. I've been there balancing crap on a stick and it never ends well.
