Home Depot pine beat the expensive hardwood I ordered online

I bought a set of premium poplar boards from an online lumber supplier for a bookshelf project and half of them arrived warped. Picked up some common pine from my local Home Depot for $40 less and it stayed straight through the whole build. Has anyone else had better luck with big box store lumber over specialty suppliers?

My buddy Tom ordered $200 worth of oak from a specialty place for his dining table and three boards had these weird cracks running down the middle. He grabbed some Douglas fir from Lowe's (not even Home Depot, I know) for a fraction of the price and that table's been solid for two years now. The online stuff looked pretty though, like real nice grain and all that (but who cares when it splits on you). He still jokes about it every time he walks past the lumber aisle.

Man that's rough when you pay extra thinking you're getting quality and it lets you down. Glad the Home Depot pine worked out for you though, sometimes the cheap stuff just behaves better.
