Ceiling fan wobble got worse after I tried to balance it with tape and coins

I swapped out a noisy light kit on our bedroom fan in Austin and threw on some pennies with electrical tape to fix the wobble, but now the whole fixture shakes harder than before and the screws feel loose. My neighbor said I should've used a balancing kit with clamps instead of just eyeballing it, and now I'm worried the bracket mount is cracked from the extra vibration. Has anyone else made this mistake and fried the motor, or can I just rebalance it with a proper kit from Home Depot without replacing the whole fan?
