Shoutout to my dad for making me rethink silverware direction after 30 years

My dad stayed with me last weekend and saw me loading forks facing up in the basket. He said in his 40 years as a dishwasher at the diner in Scranton, they always faced them down for safety and better cleaning. I argued it traps water, but he pointed out that the spray arm hits the concave side way harder than I thought. Has anyone tested this with a real before and after?

My dad was a line cook at a diner in Allentown for 25 years and he always said the same thing. I actually tested it with my dishwasher at home, ran a load with forks up and another with forks down, and the down ones came out way clearer with no food stuck near the tines. The trapped water thing is annoying but I just give them a quick shake over the sink before I dry them. If you want to fix the water issue, tilt the basket a little when you pull it out so it drains better.

My uncle was a chef and he swore by facing them down too. I tried it for a week and my forks came out way cleaner around the tines. The water thing is real though, I have to shake them out before I put them away.
