PSA: My brother in law told me I load silverware backwards

I always put forks tines up in the basket because that's how my mom did it. Then my brother in law saw me loading the dishwasher at Thanksgiving and said I was trapping food in the tines that way. He made me stand there while he pulled out a fork from the basket and showed me dried gunk stuck between the tines from last wash. I switched to tines down that same night and I hate to admit he was right. Everything comes out cleaner now even with the pasta plates I used to hand wash first. Only downside is having to touch the dirty tines when I unload but that's what the rinse cycle is for I guess. Anyone else get schooled by a relative on their loading technique?

Isn't it wild how one little change can make such a big difference, even when you've been doing it the same way your whole life? I switched to tines down a few years ago too and haven't looked back, but I still dry my hands on my pants after loading every time because I can't stand the feeling of wet food residue.

Oh man, the wet food residue thing is the worst. I started keeping a little kitchen towel draped over the dishwasher handle specifically for that. You just grab it, dry your hands, and toss it back. Saves your pants and keeps you from that gross feeling. Makes the whole loading process way less annoying.

I switched mine around too after my sister pointed out how much cleaner they get. Now I can't go back. I just grab a paper towel when I unload to avoid touching the wet spots. Makes a world of difference with the spaghetti plates.
