My roommate puts all the forks prongs-down and it drives me crazy
I live with two other guys in a 3-bedroom apartment and we've got this ongoing dishwasher war. The other day I walked in and saw the entire silverware basket packed with forks pointing down, spoons stacked together, and knives mixed in with everything else. I swear half of them came out still dirty because they were nested so tight. I had to pull out 30 pieces and re-load them just to run a decent cycle. Does anyone else have a house rule about silverware direction or am I being too picky?

You have my full sympathy on this one. My own family had the same argument for years. The real problem is when people stack spoons or forks together facing the same way so they get stuck. I ended up just washing the silverware by hand half the time because it was easier than picking everything out and redoing it. Maybe sit down with your roommates and explain that it is not about being picky, it is about the dishes actually getting clean. Sometimes people just do not realize how much of a difference it makes.

Stacking spoons with all the heads facing the same way? That is a war crime in the kitchen. I would lose my mind if I opened the dishwasher and saw that. The nesting thing is real, water can't even get between them when they are locked together like that. You end up with dried food on half the spoons and have to rewash them anyway. Hand washing them like you did is honestly the fastest solution sometimes. People just do not get that it is not about being neat, it is about the dishes actually getting clean the first time.
