My mother-in-law visited last week and rearranged my entire dishwasher after I loaded it
She stood there silently, then rotated every plate 45 degrees and flipped all the forks upside down while saying 'you're going to melt the handles' so now I have to ask, has anyone else had a guest just completely redo your loading pattern without asking?

...and honestly I think she was just establishing dominance over your kitchen like a silverback gorilla showing off. Next time she comes over you should preemptively load it exactly how she likes it, then watch her have a meltdown because she can't "fix" anything. Forks up, forks down, who cares as long as the water hits them and they don't stab someone when you empty it. Personally I'd start loading it wrong on purpose just to see how far she'll go with the plate rotations. At this point you're basically living in a dishwasher loading cult and she's the high priestess.

My sister in law did this to me once, but with my silverware drawer. She said I was "mixing the teaspoons with the tablespoons" and spent twenty minutes reorganizing everything while I just stood there holding a bag of frozen peas. I honestly think people get way too worked up about dishwasher loading. Unless you're melting actual plastic handles on the regular, who really cares which way the forks face? The water still hits them, they still get clean, and nobody is going to die because a plate is slightly rotated. If she put everything back in the right spots and didn't break anything, maybe just let her have this one weird quirk. Pick your battles, you know?
