My dad hit me with a dishwasher truth bomb last Sunday

My dad came over to help fix a leaky faucet and saw me loading the dishwasher forks up. He just said 'you're trapping water in the handles, that's why they rust at the base.' I've been doing forks up for like 15 years thinking it was the only way. Now I'm questioning everything I know about loading. Has anyone else had a family member drop a loading rule that changed your whole system?

My aunt showed me that plastic containers actually do fine on the bottom rack if you keep them away from the heating element on the very bottom. The real danger is putting them too close to the vent at the front of the machine, that's where the hot air blasts out and warps them. I still put my tupperware on the top rack mostly, but sometimes if the top is full I'll wedge a couple sturdy ones on the bottom near the back where it's cooler. Also your dad was right about the forks, I switched to putting them handles down and haven't had a rusty fork since.

Right there with you, my mom caught me putting plastic containers on the bottom rack and gave me the whole lecture about warping. It's wild how we just cruise through life thinking we know the right way until someone drops a bomb like that.
