Heard my roommate say forks go tines down and I actually stopped to think about it

We were doing dishes last night and he just casually drops that forks should go tines down in the basket. I always put them tines up because that's how my mom did it. But he said it's safer for grabbing them out without stabbing yourself. Honestly, I tried it this morning and it does make grabbing them easier but now I'm worried they won't get as clean. Any of you switch sides on this?

My grandma always said tines down keeps dust off them in the drawer.

Had a buddy who stored his forks tines up for years. One day he dropped a drawer full of silverware, landed on a fork, and ended up with a nasty puncture wound in his palm. Took him to the ER and everything. He's team tines down now.
