Question about how a 70 year old at a Seattle gallery changed how I title my digital pieces
I was showing three digital prints at a small gallery in Seattle and this older guy kept coming back to one piece called 'test_final_03' lol. He asked why I gave it a name that sounds like a file instead of something that says what it is. I told him titles never felt important to me since the art speaks for itself, but he said a name is the first thing a viewer reads before they even look at the work. Now I am going back through my whole folder and renaming stuff, and it actually makes me see the pieces differently. Has anyone else had a title totally change how people react to their digital work?
Used to shrug off titles too, figured the work should just speak for itself and a name was basically just a label for my own files. But after reading this I went back and looked at some of my older pieces with names like "scan_02" and yeah, I see what that guy meant, because a title primes you before your eyes even hit the image. Renaming stuff has actually made me notice things in my own work I had stopped seeing.
