Pro tip: I saw a post about using only three colors for a whole piece and it clicked for me.

I was scrolling through a gallery and saw a comment that said, 'Limiting your palette forces you to be creative with value, not just hue.' I tried it on a simple landscape piece and it made me focus on light and shadow way more than I usually do. Has anyone else tried a strict color limit and found it helped their work?

Oh totally. I read that a lot of old master paintings were done with a super limited palette on purpose.

That just sounds like putting artificial limits on yourself for no reason.

Tell @rubyschmidt that creativity loves a little pressure. Maybe if Ryan tries painting with just raw umber and titanium white he'll understand, or maybe he'll just throw his brush at the wall. Guess there's only one way to find out.
