Just saw a digital art piece sell for way more than I thought it would

I was scrolling through a big online auction site last night and saw a digital painting go for over 5,000 dollars. It was a cool space scene, but I always figured digital stuff was worth less because you can copy it. Has the market for this kind of art really changed that much?

Read an article that backed up what @anthonymurray said, about people paying for the certificate now.

That sale price is actually pretty normal now for established digital artists. The value comes from the artist's name and the NFT certificate proving you own the original file, not just a copy. I saw a piece by an artist called Beeple sell for a crazy 69 million a few years back, which totally reset the market. People are paying for bragging rights and the chance it might go up in value later.

The Beeple sale was a one-off event driven by auction hype. Most NFT art from established artists has dropped over 90% in value since 2022. The certificate just points to a URL that can go dead, so the "original file" part feels shaky to me.
