The 12-valve 5.9 I overhauled in 2009 vs the common rail I touched last week

Back then you could rebuild one of those old Cummins with a service manual and a torque wrench in a weekend. The shop i work at in Grand Rapids just had a customer's 2019 Ram in with a CP4 pump failure, and the fuel system damage alone was $5,200. What do you guys think is the last truly simple diesel engine still being made?

I read somewhere that the new 7.3 gas engine Ford makes is actually simpler than any modern diesel at this point. Maybe it's just me but the days of a truly simple diesel truck ended around the early 2000s.

Right because nothing says "simple" like needing a computer science degree and a $2000 scan tool just to clear a check engine light on a modern diesel. At least with gas you can still try the old "smack it with a hammer" fix first.

It's like everything now, you don't own it, you just lease the right to fix it.
