That old Cummins N14 taught me a lesson about fuel timing at a truck stop in Flagstaff

Was rolling through Flagstaff last week on a road call for a fleet truck that died on the shoulder. Got there and the driver swore it was a fuel filter issue. I checked and saw the timing was way off on that N14. Ended up spending 2 hours in the gravel readjusting the fuel pump with a wrench and a flashlight. Turns out the previous guy had the injection timing advanced too far and it was causing a miss under load. Has anyone else dealt with a mis-timed N14 that acted like a fuel problem on the highway?

Traded a fuel filter for a timing job in the dirt. Sounds about right for an N14.

Hold on now, let me play the other side of this. That N14 is a Sensitive beast when it comes to fuel system wear, and what you felt as a timing issue could easily be a failing injector or a plugged return line. I've seen plenty of guys chase timing on these things for hours only to find out it was a trash fuel tank screen on the pickup tube all along. Claiming it was definitely a timing issue from a "previous guy" is a pretty big leap without testing fuel pressure first, especially at altitude in Flagstaff where the thin air changes everything. Maybe the driver was right to suspect fuel, and you just jumped to the wrong conclusion because dirty work in gravel makes for a better story.
