That $40 torque wrench from a pawn shop just cost me a head gasket

Picked up a used torque wrench at a pawn shop in Tucson last month to save some cash on a 6.0 rebuild, and it was reading 20 ft-lbs off at the top end. I torqued the heads to what I thought was spec, fired it up, and got coolant in the oil within 15 minutes. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a secondhand torque tool, and do you trust any brand enough to buy it used?
