Old timer swore I was overfilling oil on my 7.3 Powerstroke

A guy named Frank at the parts counter told me I was putting in too much oil on my 7.3. Said to fill it to the low mark instead of the full mark. I thought he was crazy because every manual says top it off. Ran it that way for about 3 months and the high pressure oil pump started acting finicky. Turns out he was right about the crankcase pressure building up. Has anyone else had a old timer give you advice that went against the book but actually worked?

Frank sounds like the kind of guy who keeps a 20 year old calendar on his wall just so he knows what day it is. Overfill a 7.3 and you might as well be shaking a soda can before opening it, that crankcase pressure will find a weak spot faster than a dog finds a dropped steak. Bet his advice saved your HPOP from an early retirement. Old timers are like that manual you never read but somehow works better.

Yeah I used to think a little overfill wouldn't hurt anything, but after seeing a buddy's 7.3 push seals out on a cold start I changed my tune. Frank's dead right on that one.
