Had a 6.0 Powerstroke blow an oil cooler on I-75, changed my whole tune on coolant filters

I used to think coolant filters were a waste of money on those motors. Then I was hauling a skid steer near Macon, GA and my 2005 F-350 started puking coolant everywhere. Tore it apart in a buddy's shop and found the oil cooler clogged solid with casting sand and silicates. After I dropped $1200 on parts and a weekend of cursing, I finally caved and put a Dieselsite coolant filter kit on. Now I'm convinced, has anyone else seen a big difference after adding one or am I just late to the party?

Read a tech paper from Ford's own engineers that said casting sand left in the block was a known issue on the 6.0, so it makes sense the filters catch that junk before it kills the oil cooler. Buddy of mine runs a fleet of these trucks and swears he hasn't lost a single cooler since he started using them about 80k miles ago. You're not late, I think most of us learn the hard way on these motors.

3000 miles on mine with the filter and I cut the first one open. Found actual chunks of what looked like casting sand and some brown gritty paste. Probably saved my oil cooler from a slow death.
