Didn't know cylinder liners could walk until a 3406E taught me in Reno

Last month I had a customer's 3406E come in with a nasty coolant leak and a knock I swore was a rod bearing. I pulled the head and found the liner had actually walked up about 0.012 inches out of the block. I've been turning wrenches for 11 years and never once saw that happen in person, always thought it was just a textbook thing. Turns out the liner protrusion spec was off from a bad install 4 years prior, and the clamp load just gave up under heat cycles. Reading the service data on TMT showed the wear pattern clear as day once I knew what to look for. That little discovery saved the guy a full rebuild, we just reseated the liner and torqued it right. Has anyone else run into liners migrating on these older Cat motors, or did I just get the lucky one?
