First time I deep fried a turkey in my driveway in Tulsa, the oil hit 480 and things got scary
I was in my driveway in Tulsa last Thanksgiving, trying to fry a 14 pound turkey for the first time. I filled the pot way too high and the oil climbed to 480 degrees while I was messing with the burner. When I dropped that bird in, oil boiled over the rim and hit the flame, and a 3 foot fireball shot past my face. I killed the gas, threw baking soda on it, and the fire died out after about 10 seconds. I will never fill past the max line again, but does anyone here use a fryer basket instead of the hook to avoid the splash?
480 degrees is insane, I cant believe you stood there long enough to drop the bird in at that temp. Most oils start smoking around 450 so that thing was probably ready to go up on its own. And you filled it too high on top of that, thats like two of the worst mistakes stacked together. The basket wont save you from a boilover by the way, it only helps with the splash when the bird goes in, the real fix is measuring with water first and killing the flame before you lower anything. Glad you still have your face man.
