Rant: paid $35 for a mall photo pass and the security guy followed me for 20 minutes
I drove out to the old Rolling Acres in Akron, Ohio to shoot the empty corridors on a Sunday afternoon. Paid $35 online for a "photo permit" the website said was required for anyone with a camera. The permit turned out to be a printout, and the guy at the door had no idea what it was. He radioed someone, and a security guard shadowed me for 20 minutes while I tried to get a shot of the dead food court. The $35 bought me nothing but a laminated badge and a headache. The Sears anchor store is still sealed off, but the Dillard's wing is wide open if you know which door. Has anyone else dealt with malls charging for photo permits, and did yours actually work?
Not sure the permit was the real problem here. Tons of dead malls hand that $35 to a third party website that has zero connection to the actual building, so of course the door guy and the guard had no clue what your printout was. The laminated badge is the tell, they sell you a souvenir and call it access. Sounds like you still got the shots though, so the Dillard's tip is the actual useful part of this post.
