Guy at an estate sale in Ohio told me our local mall had a two story Sears with a snack bar, and I had to go see it
I grew up going to Chapel Hill Mall in Akron and never knew the Sears there had a whole second floor most people never went up to. The guy running the sale worked there from 1988 to 2002 and said the bottom floor was tools and appliances, the top was just furniture and a little lunch counter with 6 stools. He said the second floor closed around 1997 and they roped off the escalator, but the snack bar stuff sat up there for another 5 years like a time capsule. I drove by the mall today and the whole Sears wing is fenced off, windows papered. Makes me wonder how many dead malls are hiding whole floors that shoppers never saw in their final decade. Did your local Sears or JCPenney have a secret upper level?
