The day my credit card got skimmed at a gas station in Phoenix changed everything

I used to just swipe my card at any pump without thinking twice. Then last summer I got a fraud alert for $400 in charges from a sketchy online store. Now I always tap to pay or use Apple Pay at the pump, and I check for loose readers before I even get out of the car. Have any of you found a way to spot skimmers that actually works every time?

Respectfully, I think people overthink the skimmer thing a bit. Most gas stations have tap to pay now and that's basically impossible to skim. If you really want to be safe just wiggle the card reader before you insert your card. If it moves at all or feels loose don't use it. Also paying inside is always an option if you're that worried. I just use my credit card and let the fraud protection do its job since the bank always covers it. Do you really think checking for readers every single time is worth the hassle when the bank has your back?

@murray.spencer have you ever actually found a loose reader at a pump though?
