The cafe owner who laughed at my 16 character password rule

I was helping a friend set up Wi-Fi for her shop in Portland and she said 'nobody's hacking my latte orders.' She showed me her router admin password, it was her dog's name and 1234. That conversation made me rethink how I explain risk to small business folks. Has anyone else found a simpler way to get non-tech people to care about basic security?

Take the shop owner's side for a second. Her dog's name and 1234 is dumb, sure, but it's also a latte shop. The real risk isn't some hacker in a hoodie, it's her neighbor or an ex-employee who knows her dog's name. I get that you want to scare her into better habits, but laughing with her instead of at her goes further. Start with something real, like telling her the Wi-Fi password should be separate from her admin password, and that's it. One small change beats a lecture about password length. If she can see how that one swap protects her credit card reader, she'll care more. But if you come at her with 16 character rules, she's going to tune you out, and honestly, I don't blame her.
