I thought my neighbor was paranoid about his home network setup
He told me last month he set up a separate guest Wi-Fi network for visitors and smart devices. I figured it was overkill until my own smart plug got hacked and started turning my lights on at 3 AM. The tech support person said it likely came from a compromised device on my main network. Has anyone else had a smart home gadget cause a security problem like that?

That 3 AM light thing is the exact kind of story that makes me unplug my smart speaker sometimes. I read about a guy whose hacked thermostat cranked the heat to 90 all weekend while he was gone. It just makes you wonder what else on the network is listening or waiting for a way in. Your neighbor might have been onto something with that separate setup after all.

What gets me is the old stuff still on your wifi. That printer from 2015 or the kids tablet you forgot about, they're like open doors. My buddy's security camera got weird because of an old smart plug he never updated.
