I thought my dad was just being paranoid about turning off his phone's wifi in public, but a guy at a coffee shop in Denver showed me something that changed my mind.

Used to think my dad was just being weird about it too. I mean, who cares if someone sees my phone's name is "Thea's iPhone," right? But that guy in Denver had this little gadget that could pull up all the networks phones were trying to auto-connect to. He showed me a list of home router names, work logins, everything. It felt like watching someone read everyone's mail. I turn my wifi off in public now.

What did he show you? That's actually pretty scary.

Oh, perfect. So now we have to worry about digital pickpockets along with the regular kind. That guy probably pulled up a list of every phone name and login in the place on his laptop. Makes you want to just carry a tin can and a string.
