Found a public WiFi network at my local coffee shop that wasn't even password protected
I was grabbing a late night coffee after my shift at the 24 hour diner on Elm Street and noticed their guest network had no password at all. The owner said they just set it up that way so people don't have to ask. I mean, is that a huge risk or am I overthinking it? Has anyone else seen businesses doing this and talked them into locking it down?

Honestly, it's a pretty massive risk. Ngl, anyone with a basic laptop and free software can see what people are doing on an open network like that. It's not about being paranoid, it's just how unsecured networks work. The owner probably doesn't get it, but you're right to point it out. Maybe just mention it casually, like "hey, a lot of folks might appreciate a password on your WiFi, just for safety." Most people don't think about it until something goes wrong.

You've got to be kidding me, right? A coffee shop with no password on their WiFi? That's just asking for trouble.
I mean, I get the owner wanting to be nice and not make people hunt them down for the code, but anyone with a laptop could be snooping on that network. It's a huge risk for anyone who connects and does something like check their bank account or log into work stuff.
Honestly, I'd be a little scared to even use it myself. You never know who else is on there watching traffic.
If you're friendly with the owner, maybe just say something like "hey, I noticed your WiFi is open, that might be a little risky for your customers." They might appreciate the heads up.

Oh man, you're totally right though.
I'm probably the exact type of person you're warning about, honestly. I once connected to an open network at a diner and spent twenty minutes trying to log into my email before realizing I was basically shouting my password at anyone nearby with a laptop. Felt so dumb afterward.
Stella, I think you've got a solid point about mentioning it to the owner. Most folks don't realize how easy it is for someone to peek at your traffic on an open network. It's not like you need to be some hacker genius to do it either.
I'd probably still use the wifi, but I'd keep my banking and work stuff turned off while I'm there. Just feels like common sense, you know?
