Thinking back to when the whole street would come out to watch a big lift
These days, you're lucky if anyone looks up from their screen.

Yeah, the part about nobody looking up from their screen really hits home. I saw a news segment saying that even at parades now, most people watch through their phone cameras instead of actually watching. They interviewed a guy who said he missed his kid's first catch at a ball game because he was trying to film it. Kind of proves the point, doesn't it?

That story about the guy missing his kid's catch is sad, but I wonder if it's as common as they say. People have always had things take their attention away, like cameras or just daydreaming. Recording something on your phone lets you watch it again later, which can be nice. I bet most parents still cheer in the moment even if they're filming. Aren't we just more aware of phones because they're so visible?

Seriously Eric, put the phone down and just WATCH the game. You can always record the next at-bat if you really need it, but you can't get that first reaction back. Trust me, the kid remembers if you were looking at them or your screen.
