That load chart comment from a veteran operator in Philly turned me around

I used to think I could eyeball most lifts if the weight felt close enough. Last Tuesday I was setting steel beams at a site near the Delaware River, and this old timer named Ray watched me boom out without checking the chart for the 60 foot radius. He just said, 'Son, that chart ain't paper, it's your margin.' I pulled up the numbers and I was at 78% capacity, not the 60% I guessed. That minute of checking saved me from possibly dropping a 4 ton beam onto a crew below. Now I do a quick chart read before every pick, even the ones that feel easy. Has anyone else had a close call that made them slow down and respect the math? I keep a laminated chart in the cab now but I want to hear how you all handle the pressure to hurry.
