Showerthought: I always said taglines were a waste of time until I saw the load chart math
I used to blow off taglines completely. Figured they were just extra rope to mess with on the ground and slow everything down. Then a guy named Duane on a hospital job in Tulsa had me run the numbers on a pick with the boom at a steep angle, and the tagline was what kept the load from swinging out past the radius when the wind kicked up. He showed me that on a 3,200 pound panel, even a small drift can push you over your chart, and that little rope line keeps the load tracking right under the boom tip. I looked it up in the manual that night and there it was in plain English, wind and swing are both listed right there in the notes. Now I rig one on almost everything with a big flat face, especially outdoors. So for the guys who run tilt up and panels, how do you decide when a tagline is worth the hassle and when it is just slowing the crew down?
