Rant: Almost dropped a load at the Port of Savannah last month

I was on a mobile crane unloading steel coils when the ground gave way under my outrigger. Turned out the site had an old drainage trench filled with loose gravel they didn't mark on the map. Has anyone else run into unmarked underground hazards that made you rethink your setup?

Hammer test the ground before setting outriggers. Saved my ass more than once.

Yeah for sure @nina_jenkins! That hammer test is smart. I started doing it after I set up on what looked like solid gravel once and one outrigger sank about 4 inches when I started cranking. Now I always do a quick test tap around the pads before I even pull the pins.

Buddy of mine had an outrigger break through a buried septic tank lid.
